Peak Wool Heritage Project

open day wool displayIn 2006 FLC launched a project to consider ways in which value could be added to Peak District sheep fleece.  In the current market, wool holds little or no value to the farmer, as the price commanded by a newly shorn fleece now does not even cover the cost of shearing and collection by the Wool Board.

In collaboration with the Gateway Through The Arts project, FLC gathered together farmers, crafts people and artisans to consider different qualities of wool and ways Peak District wool could be used productively and creatively.  At a series of workshops participants had the chance to try a range of wool related activities including using a spinning wheel, drop spindle and a weaving loom, natural dying, needle felting and wet felting techniques.  The idea was to give a taste of the many exciting things which can be done with Peak District fleece.

Over the next 12 months the “Ways with Wool” group continued to meet on a monthly basis and, in September 2007, the group constituted itself as “The Peak Wool Heritage Project”.

The project continues to focus on promoting Peak District wool and developing opportunities to add value to this great resource.
