Health Champions

Are you in need of a helping hand to improve your health?  Could someone you know benefit from a little friendly support?

Our health always seems more valuable after we lose it, but often, simple and small changes in life-style can make all the difference to the way we feel now, and to our long term health.

Health Champions can really make a difference. It might be that a person doesn’t know where to find help, or they don’t want to go on their own, or they just need a gentle nudge from somebody else to get around to it.

For farmers especially, who depend on their health and well-being to enable them to make a living, ignoring warnings about their health can impact upon both their lives and livelihood.  But when every day is filled with pressing jobs, it is often impossible to prioritise a visit to the doctors, think about diet or take time out away from the farm.

If you know someone who might benefit from support from a Health Champion, please contact Penny Ward at the Farming Life Centre.

Could you volunteer as a Health Champion?

A Health Champion is a volunteer who works a few hours a week on a one-to-one basis with individuals who want to improve their health – educating, encouraging, supporting and mentoring.

The Farming Life Centre currently has six volunteer Health Champions, co-ordinated by our Health Trainer Penny Ward.

Health Champions are local residents who:

  • understand what it means to live and work in the rural Peak District
  • have an interest in health and well-being and in supporting others
  • are prepared to be there for individuals on a one-to-one basis to help them on their way to making healthier lifestyle choices.

The Health Trainer Project is a chance for volunteers to:

  • receive a short free training course in health improvement
  • learn new skills in a friendly atmosphere
  • become part of a support network with other Health Champions
  • gain reward and satisfaction from supporting local people in the rural community to access services and support, making a positive difference to their lives.

The Farming Life Centre needs you!

Our Health Trainer project is still recruiting.  No previous experience or qualifications necessary, so why not give it a try?

If you would like to find out more about volunteering as a Health Champion, please contact Penny Ward at the Farming Life Centre.
